The front covers of the 63 yearbooks in the assignment, from 1951 to 2020

We have been given a new assignment: digitising the yearbooks of Föreningen Gamla Lund (the Old Lund Society). The society was founded in 1918 as one of the first of its kind in Sweden, and since 1919 it has published a yearbook about the city and its history.

The assignment covers 63 yearbooks, from no. XXXIII of 1951 to no. 102 of 2020 — from Lundensisk vardag för 150 år sedan (1951) and Biskop Peder Winstrup 1605–1679 (1952) to, among others, Ortnamn i Lund, Kartornas Lund, Klosterstaden, Filmen i Lund, Kring Lund C (1999) and Arkitekterna som formade Lund – ett lexikon (2020).

We have just begun the assignment by scanning the covers, at 600 dpi in colour on our Image Access Bookeye 5 V1 Archive. In the next step the books will be cut open at the spine and the book blocks fed as loose sheets through our Inotec Scamax 6x1.

After scanning we post-process the pages: skewed pages are straightened, some pages are rotated and larger specks are retouched away. The text is then OCR-processed so that the books become searchable. The OCR text is left uncorrected, except on the title page, which is corrected. Finally the files are downsampled and compressed to 150 dpi so that they load quickly on the web.
