New: AI reading of surveys – locally on our own computer
The latest AI models now make it both possible and economical to capture paper surveys entirely with AI. The AI reads every answer much the way a human does: ticks and circled response options, handwritten numbers and open free-text answers. I then check the result against the image of the survey page before delivery.
The AI model runs on a computer here at our service bureau, not in any cloud service. The survey images and answers are never sent to an AI provider, so the AI reading is covered by the same data processing agreement and confidentiality as the rest of the assignment.
What this means for you
- The survey does not have to be designed for scanning: no registration marks or special layout are required. It works just as well with surveys made in Word, photocopies and older surveys from the archive.
- Handwriting becomes data: handwritten number fields such as dates, ages and personal ID numbers, as well as open answers, are transcribed as text in the data file – not just kept as images.
- Difficult answers are interpreted in context: crossed-out and changed ticks, ticks between two boxes and comments in the margin.
- Delivery according to your codebook: multiple ticks, missing answers and invalid values are coded according to your rules (e.g. 98 and 99) in Excel, SPSS or TXT.
Always checked against the image
An AI model can misread, and an error that looks plausible is harder to spot than an obvious one. That is why no AI-read answer is released unchecked: every answer is validated against permitted values and ranges, check digits are calculated where they exist, and anything uncertain is flagged. Finally, I go through the answers myself against the image of the survey page, just as with classic survey scanning.

Reports and data files
We deliver reports and data files in Excel, SPSS and TXT formats. Complete image sets of the scanned surveys in PDF format are included at no extra cost. Delivery is made via encrypted Dropbox or an encrypted USB stick.
GDPR and personal data
Survey responses often contain personal data. We sign a data processing agreement in accordance with the GDPR and handle the material under confidentiality throughout the assignment. The material never leaves our service bureau. This also applies to the AI reading, which runs locally on our own computer.
