Six pages from the book Sha’agat me’uneh: the front cover with railway tracks leading to a camp gate, the title page, a page with a handwritten letter, two pages with photographs and a page with Hebrew newspaper clippings
The front cover, the title page and four pages from the book

I have digitised the Hebrew book Sha’agat me’uneh (שאגת מעונה, roughly “The Cry of the Tormented”) by Yaakov Maroko for a client. The book is the author's own account of how he survived the years 1939–1945 in the camps of Majdanek, Skarżysko and Częstochowa. It is richly illustrated with photographs, letters and newspaper clippings — among them articles from 1995 about how, after more than fifty years, he was reunited with his son, who had been taken from him in Majdanek and whom he had believed dead.

The cover was scanned at 600 dpi in colour on our Image Access Bookeye 5 V1 Archive. The book was then cut open at the spine, and the 268 pages of the book block were fed as loose sheets through our Inotec Scamax 6x1, also at 600 dpi in colour.

The book has been delivered as two PDF/A-2b files at 600 dpi containing all 270 pages, as images without a text layer. One reproduces the pages with correct colours according to FADGI, just as they were scanned. In the other, the background has been made white and the text darker, while the photographs and newspaper clippings have been left untouched. Both files are validated against PDF/A-2b and have the sRGB colour profile from the scan embedded.

The same book page twice, side by side: on the left with correct colours from the scan, on the right with a white background and darker text; the photograph of men at a workbench is identical in both
The same page in the two files: with correct colours according to FADGI (left) and with a white background and darker text (right) — the photograph is untouched
